What You Should Think About – Before You Get a Hamster

The hamster is a small animal that thrives best alone. You can take the hamster cage with you in the car when you go on holiday, but most hamsters will prefer not to be transported.

Children often want animals that can be petted and cuddled with, something the hamster is not so well suited to. The hamster is nocturnal and this must be respected. Many children find it disappointing that the hamster sleeps at times of the day when they themselves are awake.

You are responsible for ensuring that your hamster receives proper care, even when you are away. Before you get a hamster, you should therefore talk to friends and family about help to look after the hamster during the holidays. You should inform the person who will look after the animal about the routines for feeding, cleaning and airing periods. You should also inform which vet should be contacted if necessary.

You can take the hamster cage with you in the car when you go on holiday, but most hamsters will prefer not to be transported with the lifting of cages, drafts from windows and lack of rest. Hamsters that are weak, sick or have nursing young should not be exposed to transport or other stressful events.
